My PhD research proposal, titled “The Politics of Sexual Self-Experimentation in the Digital Age: A Comparison of Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong,” is the second stage of my current MPhil thesis, “Sexual Self-Experimentation in the Age of Platform and Algorithm: The Case of Sexfluencer/Wanghuang in Hong Kong.” In the first stage, this MPhil exploratory qualitative study adapts sexfluencer/wanghuang in Hong Kong as a case study to illustrate how individuals leverage new media to challenge and reshape social norms and taboos regarding body and sexuality. Also, it adapts the concepts of technological affordances and commodification to analyse how platforms like OnlyFans and X (Twitter) simultaneously empower and limit individuals to express sexual desire and identities and confront societal expectations. Expanding the scope of my current MPhil thesis, my PhD thesis will have a comparative focus on the experiences of sexfluencers/wanghuangs in three Asian cities: Mainland China—marked by strict governmental control and social conservatism, Taiwan—marked by greater freedoms and a more vibrant and inclusive LGBTQ+ community and Hong Kong—represented by the blend of traditionalism and liberalism and social moderation. The study aims to conduct in-depth interviews with at least 60 sexfluencers/wanghuang in these three cities to understand how varying degrees of geopolitical environment, political freedom, different sexual norms, and technological access, including algorithms and censorship, shape individual online sexual self-experimentation, agency and discourse power.
