My name is Zhu Ye Julia, a Year 3 Sociology student with a parallel path as an ESG and economic analyst.

To me, sociology is more than a discipline. It’s a powerful lens for deconstructing complexity. It drives me to ask not just “what is,” but “why is it so?” and “who benefits?” This sociological imagination transforms everyday issues into puzzles of social structure, compelling me to search for root causes, not just symptoms.

This perspective has fundamentally shaped my dual path, bridging data-driven analysis with human-centered inquiry. In my ESG work, sociology pushes me to look beyond quantitative data. It leads me to critically examine the governance behind carbon metrics: Who sets the standards? What values are prioritized? What social costs are overlooked? This critical approach allows me to contribute to frameworks that genuinely balance environmental performance with social equity.

Yet beyond spreadsheets and databases, my commitment to equity drives me to engage directly with marginalized communities. In 2023, I conducted an ethnographic study on the social exclusion of sex workers in Hong Kong. Spending time on Portland Street and listening to their stories, I applied sociological theories to understand the stigma and structural barriers they endure. This research solidified my belief in advocacy rooted in both empathy and evidence.

Similarly, at the Women’s Center, I used applied theatre techniques to co-create spaces where women could reclaim their narratives. Witnessing participants, especially a resilient single mother, find their voice was a powerful reminder that personal transformation is often the first step toward social change.

Guiding these experiences is a simple yet enduring motto:

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

To me, this means aligning action with values, whether analyzing reports, designing workshops, or drafting policy. Sociology gives me the lens to see inequalities and imagine alternatives; yet it is the courage to act that turns insight into impact.

To my fellow students and incoming freshmen:

University is your launchpad for curiosity, conviction, and contribution. Pursue what moves you, in the classroom, in internships, in community work. Challenge yourself to connect what you learn with what you care about. Your unique perspective is essential in shaping a more just and sustainable world.
